Week 1. How To Start Online Business with Netcetera.

Right guys, I’m sure we’ve all sat up and took note of how successful some of these new Online Businesses have become, Uber, Tinder, Eventbrite and many more. I’d love to have a go at starting an online business from scratch. Yep… that’s right, from idea, right the way through to attracting clients, sponsors and potentially advertising and turning the idea into something viable. To make it that little bit more challenging I’m not really a tech person which could be like doing the Tour de France on a BMX, not impossible, but not what you want to be really doing.  Pinterest Graphic – Tips Week3

I’ve had a few ideas and I’ve created a few businesses previously, and made some big mistakes. Some would say failures, but I call them lessons. We’ve heard it said plenty of times, but a fail is the first attempt in learning.

I’ve set a business up from scratch in Ghana, developing a market, catching malaria (not recommended) and having to converse in Twi. Not easy but we never gave up and achieved what we wanted to do. I’ve sold water filters and glazing and I’ve built a park. Building an online business, well this will be a challenge.

I can’t give too much detail yet, partly because I’m not sure what it will be. I’ve looked at creating an auction site but that’s sort of been done. I thought about ordering takeaways online but that’s been done too. I also had this great idea for a shared ride scheme where people could offer lifts like a taxi, but low and behold someone is now doing this too. I’ve played with the idea of a dating app too but that one brought about suspicion from my wife so I’ll park that idea for now.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be looking at the following :

Join in with the fun as we learn about all the tech stuff, searching out the online tools that make life easier and getting to grips with promoting a new business through all the social media platforms.

Sounds interesting ? I hope it’s going to be, because it’s me that has to do it. All you guys need to do is follow, share and comment as we set out on this journey to create the next Ebay. (ok maybe not Ebay)

Transfer your Web Hosting to Netcetera without any hassle
Posted by David on 09 October 2014 06:57 PM

In today’s ecommerce driven world, having a website which looks good, runs efficiently and remains online a high percentage of the time has never been so important to the success of a business. Thus finding a good web hosting company is a key component to guaranteeing that success.

online-backup-and-sharingAt Netcetera you can transfer your existing hosting package to us in just a few simple and easy to follow steps, and with a guarantee of no interruption to your website.

Before you start
Ensure that you have a full working copy of your website files, databases, cgi scripts, etc. stored on your computer. Make a record of any email address settings and passwords from your current hosting provider.

Your new Netcetera Account
Order your chosen Netcetera web hosting service using an email address that is on a different domain from the one you are initially wishing to transfer.
Upload your website via FTP address or the online file manager in the control panel, install and configure any databases and scripts. Setup your email accounts.

Test your website with your instant access url. eg http://mynewsite.soon2be.co.uk

The Switch
Contact your Domain registrar and have the DNS information for your domain changed to point at the corresponding Netcetera’s Name Servers:

ns1.nameservers.co.uk
ns2.nameservers.co.uk

In approximately 12-24 hours check your domain name to ensure it is now pointing to your new Netcetera web server.
At that point you should cancel service with your previous host provider. Make sure they remove your domain name from their DNS servers.

Check you EMail Settings
Check the email settings in your email software to make sure your settings work with the new service. This should read something similar to:

Incoming POP3 Server: mail.yourdomain.com
Outgoing (SMTP) Server: mail.yourdomain.com
Login: Your full email address

Relax…
Enjoy reliable, hassle free, supported hosting service with Netcetera and best of luck with your online venture.

Editing DNS Zone Records using Control Panel
Posted by David on 30 October 2012 09:18 AM

This article will give you a step by step guide on how to edit DNS Zone Records of your website from your Control Panel. Sign into your Control Panel and follow these steps:

1) Sign in at: https://my.netcetera.co.uk/cp/

Once logged in, click “Domains”. Once in that screen, select the Domain you wish to modify the DNS for.

From this screen, you can select the link “Edit DNS zone records”.

From within this page, you can add a new record, or  modify and delete existing records:

Deleting a record is straight forward and simply erases the record.

Adding a new record brings you to this page. Note that modifying a record brings you to an identical page, but with the record type locked in place already.

What are these different record types? Here is a synopsis, that I wrote up in the last article.

A records are what translate your website’s URL into an IP address. An example of a A-record would be “www.google.com –> 74.125.224.112″. More info here.

NS records dictate the name servers to be queried. All Netcetera servers have them, generally denoted with “ns1″ and “ns2″ subdomains.

MX records point to the service that handles email traffic. They are also associated with a priority, in case there are more than one.

CNAME records translate one URL into another. For example, “ftp.domain.com –> domain.com” would be practical if your server had both FTP and HTTP functions (like your Netcetera server does). More info here.

TXT records are places to store arbitrary text information. Most commonly used to validate the source of emails and other communications, so that other senders can’t fake their email address to look like someone else. You don’t really need to be touching this, though. More info can be found here.

SPF records. If a domain publishes an SPF record, spammers and phishers are less likely to forge e-mails pretending to be from that domain, since the forged e-mails are more likely to be caught in spam filters which check the SPF record. Therefore, an SPF-protected domain is less attractive to spammers and phishers. Since an SPF-protected domain is less attractive as a spoofed address, it is less likely to be blacklisted by spam filters and so ultimately the legitimate e-mail from the domain is more likely to get through.
